Special Request

DJ and producer Paul Woolford, known under various aliases such as Bobby Peru and Hip Therapist, created the project Special Request. Inspired by breakbeat techno, drum’n’bass, and underground dance music from U.K. pirate radio stations, Special Request launched a label of the same name in 2012. The label featured a mix of techno tracks, jungle breaks, and rave synths.

In 2013, Woolford released the “Soul Music” album, featuring tracks from singles and Special Request remixes for artists like Tessela and Lana Del Rey. Special Request also collaborated with Akkord on a split 12″ called “HTH vs HTH” in 2014. The project signed to XL in 2015 and released three “Modern Warfare EPs.” A Fabriclive mix in 2017 showcased Special Request’s productions. In the same year, Woolford released “Belief System,” his second full-length album under Special Request, with 23 tracks blending breaks, atmospherics, and field recordings.

In 2019, Woolford embarked on a prolific year, releasing four albums: “Vortex,” “Bedroom Tapes,” “Offworld,” and “Zero Fucks.” Each album explored different facets of his musical style, from hardcore club sounds to softer, house-inspired vibes. In 2020, R&S Records released the “Spectral Frequency” EP, focusing on one of the album’s standout tracks.

Paul Woolford’s Special Request project has continuously evolved, spanning various electronic music subgenres and pushing boundaries within the electronic music scene.
