SHAKA SHAMS (BE)

Growing up in Antwerp, with frequent stays in the UK and a strong connection to his South African heritage, Shaka Shams has always had a global perspective. This sense of being uprooted led him to find solace in music at the young age of 11. Caught between cultures and places, Shaka carved out his own space where he could express his independence and creativity.

At just 14, Shaka stunned the crowd during his first open mic in the UK. In that moment, he knew that music was where he truly belonged. His influences are as diverse as his background, drawing from hip hop, rap, soul, drum and bass, and house music. Artists like Nas, André 3000, Kali Uchis, Erykah Badu, Channel Tres, Tyler the Creator, and Yussef Kamaal have all left their mark on his evolving sound.

Shaka has a unique approach to music, blending elements from various genres to create what he describes as “different sized pieces of a music puzzle fitting perfectly.” His distinctive, nostalgic voice ties it all together, forming the signature Shaka Shams sound that sets him apart in the music scene. This rising star is definitely one to watch.

Beyond his music, Shaka has cultivated a strong visual identity, drawing inspiration from anime and Western cartoons. His style is mystical, mysterious, and strange, with a touch of nostalgia—welcome to the Shaka Shams universe.

In 2021, Shaka launched his “Action Only” EP series, a project that not only showcases his growth but also challenges him to reach new heights. 2022 was a breakthrough year for him, with the release of Action Only Volume 2 and several major achievements, including winning “De Nieuwe Lichting 2022,” participating in the show Plan A on VRT Max and Canvas, and contributing to the soundtrack for the French-language web series Fils De on RTBF. Shaka’s relentless work ethic and growth make him a force to be reckoned with.
