Inspired by the likes of Björk, Arca, and being affiliated with the late pop producer SOPHIE, LYZZA has always been drawn to music that mocks boundaries. At the early age of 17, the Brazilian-born producer and vocalist broke through with 2017’s ‘Power Play,’ a fierce experimental club record that made its way onto the runway soundtracks of CHROMAT and MUGLER. That same year, following a successful run of DJ sets across Amsterdam, she further cemented her invaluable role in the city’s electronic music scene with the formation of her own women and QTPOC-centered party: X3.
2018 saw LYZZA move on from the shadowy club anthems of her debut record to release the emotionally potent ‘Imposter’ EP. Showcasing her vocal mastery and songwriting gifts over twinkling ’90s-inspired production, the release enjoyed a positive reception in the press—even leading to Crack Magazine listing her among 25 artists reshaping music. A year later, LYZZA secured her identity as an avant-pop star with the ‘Defiance’ EP, which saw the lyricist at her most vulnerable. The record also proved her chops as a collaborator, as she tapped Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and Jungle’s Tom McFarland for the record’s single, “Neverland.” In 2020 her collaborative work continued to expand with an essential vocal feature on Amnesia Scanner’s 2020 LP, ‘Tearless.’
LYZZA’s career has taken her across Europe, where she has played high-profile festivals such as Sonar, Melt!, Pukkelpop, and Primavera Sound, the last performance of which resulted in Pitchfork recognizing her as one of the “Best of Primavera Sound 2018.” This year will see more releases from the consistently groundbreaking artist, who approaches every record like a new creative challenge.
